How does a new business compete with a ten-year-old one?
You can't catch them on reviews and you shouldn't try. But there's one arena where seniority is worth nothing, and there a one-month-old business can beat a decade-old one.
The fight you can't win
If your competitor has spent ten years accumulating reviews, the arithmetic is against you. A business with 2,400 reviews and one with 30 aren't in the same race, and no review campaign closes that gap in a year.
Accepting it is freeing, because it stops you spending energy where it doesn't pay.
The fight you can win
In our study, the barbershop leader — with 1,838 reviews — was named by no AI at all. Zero mentions. Meanwhile much smaller businesses did appear, for one simple reason: they had published something the AI could read. The extreme case was a bakery with 12 reviews, #315 of 329 in its category, recommended by the AI.
Seniority can't be copied. A well-written page gets published this afternoon.
Three real advantages of being new
- You get to pick your niche. The incumbent is already «the neighbourhood barbershop». You can be «the one for long beards» or «the one that opens at 6 a.m. for early shifts» — categories where competition is zero.
- Your listing is born complete. Your competitor's was created years ago and never updated, with empty attributes and stale hours. Yours can start with everything filled in.
- You carry no old bad reviews. You start clean, and a 4.9 with 40 recent reviews competes very well against a 4.3 with 800 dragged from years back.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1: business listing 100% complete — every attribute, hours, photos, the right category, a real description.
- Week 2: your own page with services, prices, address and hours in text. One page is enough.
- Week 3: get listed in the directories for your category and city. They're free and they're 27% of what AIs cite.
- Week 4: a review system — QR at the counter, the team asking, replies to all. Consistency over volume.
How to tell it's working
Every two weeks, type your ideal customer's phrase into an AI assistant and see whether you appear. It's free, and it's the most direct signal that your documentation is taking effect.
On Google, track the review count of your category's median, not the leader's. Reaching the median is a realistic goal; catching the leader in year one is not.

- How long until a new business shows up on Google Maps?
- The listing appears as soon as you verify it, but ranking among the first results takes months and depends mostly on reviews and activity. What is immediate is filtered search: if you fill in the attributes from day one, you're competing there already.
- Should I open with discounts to get reviews fast?
- You can run an opening promotion, but don't make the discount conditional on leaving a review: that violates platform policy and puts your profile at risk. Give good service and ask afterwards, with nothing exchanged.

Having the best rating and more reviews than anyone doesn't guarantee an AI will name you. We measured it: in barbershops, none of the businesses the AI recommends were in Google's real top 10.
An AI assistant doesn't check Google Maps to recommend you — it quotes pages it can read. We measured which ones, category by category, and the result explains why the best businesses are usually invisible.
