How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

An AI assistant doesn't check Google Maps to recommend you — it quotes pages it can read. We measured which ones, category by category, and the result explains why the best businesses are usually invisible.

The short answer

An AI doesn't recommend you because you're good. It recommends you because somebody wrote about you on a page it can read — and if nobody did, and you didn't write about your own business either, you simply don't exist in that answer.

That sounds unfair, and it is. It's also good news: the gap closes by writing, not by spending.

How it actually works

When somebody asks for «the best bakeries in my city», the model runs a search, pulls back a handful of pages, and builds its answer from what's written on them. It doesn't open Google Maps, doesn't sort by rating, doesn't count reviews.

So the answer doesn't reflect who is best. It reflects who is best documented.

What we found when we measured it

In August 2026 we took four categories in a Latin American capital — bakeries, coffee shops, barbershops and veterinary clinics — verified 1,147 businesses with the official Google API, and compared two lists: the real ranking by review volume, and the businesses an AI assistant actually names.

They barely overlap.

5 of 21businesses named by the AI were in Google's top 10
35 of 40review leaders were never mentioned once
0 of 26sources the AI cited was Google Maps

The finding that explains everything

Not one of the 26 sources the AI consulted was Google Maps. Not one.

The place where all your competitive advantage lives — your reviews, your rating, your years of serving people well — is exactly the one an AI doesn't read when it builds a recommendation.

The starkest contrast is a bakery with 12 reviews, sitting at #315 of 329 in its category: practically last by volume, and the AI recommends it. Meanwhile the barbershop leader, with 1,838 reviews and 4.9 stars, appears in no answer at all.

What the AI does read

We classified every source it cited. The split:

The shortest path: write it yourself

Of the 26 sources the AI cited, 5 were the business's own website. They didn't buy ads or accumulate thousands of reviews: they published a page that answered the question, and the AI quoted it.

One case says it all: a veterinary clinic published a page on its own site titled «the best vet in town». The AI read it and repeated it.

It isn't a trick. It's that today the bar for being quoted is still as low as publishing a decent page about yourself.

What to do this week

  1. Publish a page that answers the customer's question. Not a corporate site: one specific page — «best barbershop in [your neighbourhood]» — with address, hours, services and prices in plain readable text.
  2. Get into the directories the AI does read. They're 41% of all citations, they're usually free, and almost nobody does it deliberately.
  3. Earn one niche editorial mention. A single article on a specialised local blog weighs more in an AI's answer than a thousand Google reviews.
  4. Don't abandon Google Maps. It still decides who finds you on the map; it just isn't the channel that feeds the AI. Two different fights, both worth having.

Frequently asked questions

Do lots of reviews help an AI recommend me?
Indirectly, but far less than people assume. In our measurement, 38 of the 40 businesses leading their category by review volume were never mentioned by the AI. Reviews decide your position on Google Maps; the pages that talk about you decide whether an AI names you.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. There is no advertising inside ChatGPT's answers. The only route is appearing in the sources the assistant consults when it searches.
How long does it take to show up?
It depends on the new page being indexed and the assistant retrieving it. In practice think weeks rather than days, and getting listed in established directories usually shows up sooner than a brand-new site of your own.

Why can the best business in town be invisible to AI?

Having the best rating and more reviews than anyone doesn't guarantee an AI will name you. We measured it: in barbershops, none of the businesses the AI recommends were in Google's real top 10.

How do I improve my visibility on Google Maps?

Most guides repeat the same advice: ask for reviews, post photos. There's something more concrete and much faster — the empty checkboxes on your listing that quietly drop you out of filtered searches.
